The Petaluma Evening Farmers Market kicks off its sixth season this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. It takes place on Second Street between B & D Streets in the theater district of downtown Petaluma.

Like most evening markets, this market turns into more of a street fair/party as the evening progresses. Serious shoppers should try to arrive early and tuck their purchases in their cars or at home–a lot of people walk to the market–before joining in the festivities.

Although afternoon and evening markets have fewer farm and ranch vendors than morning markets, there is still plenty of diversity of produce, eggs, poultry and meats. It’s a great place to restock midweek. This Wednesday, Pepper Ranch Poultry will have fresh (instead of frozen) chicken; they’ll also be at the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday morning and at the Petaluma Farmers Market on Saturday afternoon, with fresh chicken.

There are always plenty of prepared foods at evening markets, so considering enjoying dinner after you shop.

Music at the season’s inaugural market will be provided by the Rosetown Ramblers.
