Hector Alvarez of Hector’s Honey Farm just may be the James Brown of local agriculture. Granted, he doesn’t sport a satin cape or fall to his knees in faux heartbreak. But when you look at his schedule–nine farmers markets a week at the height of the season–it’s hard to argue that he’s not the hardest working man in farming.

Although Alvarez is best known for his award-winning honeys, honeycomb and bees wax candles, he has been growing produce, as well, for the last ten years, when he purchased a three-acre farm and home on Fulton Rd. in Santa Rosa. His current harvest includes several varieties of cucumbers, including lemon cucumbers, Armenian cucumbers and several unfamiliar varieties he planted for the first time this year. He has summer squash, sweet red onions, garlic, dried chiles from last fall’s harvest and blackberries. His eggs, from a large diverse flock of hens, are deservedly popular. Soon there will be cherry tomatoes, heirloom tomatoes, five varieties of potatoes, poblanos and other fresh chiles and winter pumpkins and squashes, including excellent spaghetti squash, which he usually has through spring.

Alvarez is about to expand again. Not quite two years ago, he acquired a second property, 14 acres on River Rd., where he plans to open a farm stand. He is a member of FarmTrails and accepts customers at the current location, though hours are limited.

Despite his expansion into crop production, beekeeping and the production of honey remain at the heart of Alvarez’s endeavors. You could even say it is in his blood. His grandfather and father kept bees in Mexico and although both were primarily hobbyists, his father produced honey commercially for a time. Alvarez moved to Sonoma County in 1984 and began keeping bees almost immediately.

These days, Alvarez has anywhere between 700 and 900 hives, depending on the time of year. The number of hives fluctuates in part because it is natural for populations to decline in the winter months. But Alvarez, like almost every other beekeeper today, must struggle with colony collapse, a syndrome in which a hive of bees suddenly dies off, often without an apparent cause.

“We don’t know for sure,” he says, “but sometimes the problem is mites and sometimes, we think, it has to do with pesticides.” It isn’t possible, of course, to prevent bees from visiting contaminated flowers.

The bees–which are officially considered livestock–spend all but about three weeks of the year in Sonoma County. Each spring, Alvarez loads the supers, as constructed hives are called, onto flatbed trucks and drives them to the Central Valley near Sacramento, where the bees work the almond bloom. Without pollination by bees, there would be no almonds.

Back home, the supers are moved here and there, following the bloom, so to speak, to create the varietal honeys for which Alvarez is best known. These days, he produces six types, lavender, star thistle, wild flower, blackberry, eucalyptus and purple vetch. Along with the varietals honeys, Alvarez also offers velvety creamed honey, honeycomb, bee pollen, and beeswax candles in a variety of shapes.

If you’ve never had this unprocessed honey, you owe it to yourself to indulge. The varietal variations are quite remarkable and there is a purity to this honey, a brightness, that is quite surprising if all you know is processed supermarket honey. My favorite is the creamed honey, which is extraordinary slathered over buttery toast. (To really make the flavors blossom, sprinkle a few grains of kosher salt on top.)

    I try to not buy from beekeepers who truck their hives across the state or country. I have bought from Hector before, now I wish I hadn’t. Blame mites and pesticides for your colony losses, keep ignoring the fact that the commercial beekeeping trade relies TOO HEAVILY on shipping hives. It’s time to let the unsustainable monoculture crop in the Central Valley die.

    I work at http://www.beautiful-places.com, and we are always looking for the “next” thing in epicurean adventures, and we have been talking with Hector and his families to incorporate his farm in our “Farm to Table” program, where the chef is the guide and takes the guests on a foraging trek around Sonoma County, picking up the best and freshest of the season , only to take home and prepare a fantastic, once in a lifetime meal. Hector is concerned at this time with liability due to the bees ( obvious reasons) but we are hoping for creative solutions so peoiple can visit his farms, like handling male drones only or wearing protective wear. I have not forgotten Hector! Let’s make this happen!

    Mark, what is your concern about the transportation of bees? Many hundreds of crops–not just almonds–would fail if it were not for bee pollination. Indeed, the primary endeavor of a professional beekeeper is pollination, with honey a secondary money stream.

    I just did something similar today. I took about a dozen people on a tour of the Sebastopol farmers market, where we purchased all our ingredients. We then went to a lovely home in south Sebastopol and prepared a feast: Fried Padrons with lime juice; roasted sweet peppers with garlic, vinegar, olive oil and Weirusch Farms tomme fraiche; sliced tomato salad with garlic, olive oil and basil flowers; slow-roasted salmon with zucchini ribbons, tomato concasse and bacon; bread salad with fried peaches and currant tomatoes. For dessert, Dominique’s galettes (blood peach; fig). Let us know when your foraging treks begin so we can talk about it here.

    I met Hector and his equally industrious brother, Rafael, in 1991 when I was planting a ton of trees. I agree that he/they are work nuts. I will definitely chase Hector down to try the creamed honey with a few grains of salt.

    Mark, for your information, Hector does the best that he can for bees. As Michele said, the primary endeavor of a beekeeper is to pollinate. Yes, he takes them to the almonds. And, yes, pesticides and mites may harm the bees. But do you have any clue what other commercial, mass-producing, beekeepers do? Transport them everywhere. Feed them sugary syrups. Produce extremely low quality honey. Feed bees and their future generations “junk food”. What happens to generations of people if they are constantly fed junk food? And! You’ll be surprised. Many, and I mean many, local beekeepers in this county mix their honey with other honey they buy and call it their own, because they don’t have enough, or need to sell more. And how can we trust how others tend their hives?? Don’t be afraid. Ask the next beekeeper you buy honey from. Hector never, ever buys from any outside source. Never ever feeds his bees sugary syrups. His father, grandfather, and he do things the best they can, with the ever-changing world around them. Hector puts in so much care and time for his bees. Pollination is a necessity for orchard growers. California produces 80% of the world’s almonds. What would happen to the economy and the families of those beekeepers who rely on the pollination? No, Hector does not transport his bees all over the country. That’s absurd. He would never do that to his bees. Almonds is all he does. Give this a thought next time you purchase honey.
