The Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market will take place this Sunday, not Saturday. The change is for this week only.

This shift is necessary because of a previously scheduled event at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. Events at the Center are scheduled many months in advance and all those in place before the market moved to its current location last May must be honored. The market’s board of directors are working with the Center and the county to find a permanent home so that the day or the location does not have to shift when there is a large event at the facility.

The market will be held at the usual time, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the southeast parking lot at 50 Mark West Springs Rd., Santa Rosa.

One of the market’s highlights is 100% grass fed beef from Salmon Creek Ranch, which is on sale through the month of January. It’s $6.99 a pound instead of $7.99 when you buy ten pounds. It is some of the finest beef I’ve ever tasted. They also have their delicious duck. And if you’re looking for a healthy treat for you pup, you won’t do better that their Ducky Dog Treats, thinly sliced and dried duck liver. My little dachshund loves it.

Can anyone explain to me what the heck happened to the farmers’ markets around here? How is the “Original” one doing up there at the WFC? I sure miss everyone down here in SR but I can ride my bike to the Veterans’ Memorial, not so for the WFC. Why the big change? After trying to follow the story, I am just confused and annoyed. Why can’t everyone get along?

Jennifer, It is indeed a rather complicated situation. Simply put, while the Original market was in the process of renegotiating their lease, the county agency in charge of the Vets building rented the space to a new group of people; those people now run the Redwood Empire market at the Veteran’s building. The Original market’s search committee looked at several locations before choosing WFC. Both Saturday markets seem to be doing well and both Wednesday markets seem to be struggling a bit, but that is typical of mid-week markets, especially during the cold months. The Original market is now more convenient for people in Forestville, the river area, Windsor and Healdsburg. The Redwood Empire Market is more convenient for people, like you, who live nearby. Personally, I wish the markets were on different days. Santa Rosa has three year-round markets on Saturday morning and I think it would be helpful if one or two of those were on other days or even just at other times.
