Fresh From Our Farmers: Occidental Bohemian Farmers Market Opens for 2013

Update: The Occidental Bohemian Farmers Market opened last Friday night and continues through the last Friday of October. It was an enormously successful opening. On Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., the Occidental Bohemian Farmers Market opens for its 2013 season, with many familiar vendors returning and a few new ones joining in at one of the prettiest markets in the county. Occidental is surrounded by towering redwoods, which filter light and provide shade, so welcome in summer’s heat. Coastal fog… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Sebastopol in December

On Sunday, the Sebastopol Farmers Market was smaller than usual, though it was hard to tell, given the market’s location shift. For the month of December, the market moves to the town plaza so holiday shoppers have access to parking. It will return to its usual spot on January 6. Although the market opens at 10 a.m., the day begins much earlier for farmers and ranchers, who must harvest if they have not already done so, pack and drive, sometimes… Read More »

What are you eating today?

In today’s Seasonal Pantry, which you can read here, I invite readers to share what will be on the table today. So, here’s your chance, tell us what’s on the menu and where you got the ingredients. I’ll start: I’ve made a salad of green beans, potatoes, radishes, cucumbers, red onions and hard boiled eggs and dressed it with lemon-parsley vinaigrette. Alongside, I’ll have Pepper Road Ranch chicken, with Santa Rosa plums for dessert. Green beans are from The Patch,… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Occidental Bohemian Market Opens

When the Occidental Bohemian Farmers market opens for its 2012 season on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., it will be with several vendors that sell only at this market, along with a few farmers that sell county wide and a few that attend just one or two other markets. Star Mountain, based on Coleman Valley Rd., launches the season with radishes, scallions, basil, arugula, dill, flowers and Meyer lemons.  Hands Full Farm  has eggs, flowers and two jams, strawberry and… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Launch of the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market’s New Location

The Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market greeted Saturday morning from its new home in the southeast parking lot of the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. By 8:30 a.m., the market’s official opening time, it was full of shoppers. You could almost hear a collective sigh of relief, as two years of tension, anxiety, unhappiness and hard work receded and a new era was born. Although the space is about 25 percent smaller than its former location at the Veterans… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Last Day at Vets Building for Santa Rosa Original Farmers Market

On Wednesday at noon, the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market ends its nearly four-decade long run in the east parking lot of the Santa Rosa Veterans Building, located at the corner of Brookwood and Maple Ave., across from the fairgrounds. The Wednesday market opens, as it always has, at 8:30 a.m. Participating vendors include DeSantis Farms, with an array of familiar and rare citrus and other fruits; Schetelwitz Family Farm, which has the season’s first apricots, nectarines and plums;… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Sebastopol

By the look of it on Sunday, news is out that the Sebastopol farmers market has gone year round. A few weeks ago, the market was not that well attended but a change began in mid January. Lately I’ve heard fewer people surprised that the market operates continuously, instead of closing from December through March, as it has done until now. This Sunday, Dave Legros sold out of his wild Alaskan salmon barely an hour into the market though at… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Santa Rosa on Wednesdays

The Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market has always taken on both Wednesdays and Saturday yet et even after several decades at the same location, the east parking lot of the Veterans Building at the corner of Maple and Brookwood Avenues, the Wednesday market is nowhere near as well attended as the Saturday market. But this market is an excellent mid-week resource, offering both opportunities unavailable on Saturday. Parking is easy, as is getting into and out of the market,… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Sebastopol in late November

To my thinking, if farmers show up at the market in the rain, the least I can do is the same. But at the Sebastopol farmers market on Sunday, neither vendors nor shoppers seemed deterred by the weather. … Read More »
