Fresh From Our Farmers: Sebastopol in December

On Sunday, the Sebastopol Farmers Market was smaller than usual, though it was hard to tell, given the market’s location shift. For the month of December, the market moves to the town plaza so holiday shoppers have access to parking. It will return to its usual spot on January 6. Although the market opens at 10 a.m., the day begins much earlier for farmers and ranchers, who must harvest if they have not already done so, pack and drive, sometimes… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: First Light Farm

On Sunday at the Sebastopol Farmers Market, First Light Farm’s stall was brimming with just-picked vegetables, beautifully arranged. One long table featured mustard greens, collard greens, kales and pretty heads of butter lettuce and red leaf lettuce. Another table was piled high with Nantes carrots, red beets and torpedo onions that had been cleaned, peeled and tied in bundles. A third tiered table, where farmer Nathan Boone stands with his scale and cash box, had baskets full of colorful summer… Read More »

What are you eating today?

In today’s Seasonal Pantry, which you can read here, I invite readers to share what will be on the table today. So, here’s your chance, tell us what’s on the menu and where you got the ingredients. Alongside, I’ll have Pepper Road Ranch chicken, with Santa Rosa plums for dessert. Green beans are from The Patch,… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Launch of the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market’s New Location

The Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market greeted Saturday morning from its new home in the southeast parking lot of the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. By 8:30 a.m., the market’s official opening time, it was full of shoppers. You could almost hear a collective sigh of relief, as two years of tension, anxiety, unhappiness and hard work receded and a new era was born. Although the space is about 25 percent smaller than its former location at the Veterans… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Sebastopol

By the look of it on Sunday, news is out that the Sebastopol farmers market has gone year round. A few weeks ago, the market was not that well attended but a change began in mid January. Lately I’ve heard fewer people surprised that the market operates continuously, instead of closing from December through March, as it has done until now. This Sunday, Dave Legros sold out of his wild Alaskan salmon barely an hour into the market though at… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Sebastopol in late November

To my thinking, if farmers show up at the market in the rain, the least I can do is the same. But at the Sebastopol farmers market on Sunday, neither vendors nor shoppers seemed deterred by the weather. … Read More »
