Fresh From Our Farmers: Windsor Farmers Market

The Windsor Farmers Market, which opened for its 2014 season in April, has always been as much a community event as a destination for local produce and other farm and ranch products. It has the air of a street fair, with a lot of crafts vendors, prepared foods and entertainment, and there is a special emphasis on kids and families. “We asked Costeaux to bring their pizza crusts and sliced bread,” Tina Castelli , the market’s manager explains, adding that… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Cotati Farmers Market

The Cotati Farmers Market opened for its 2012 season last Thursday afternoon, with both familiar vendors and vendors unique to this market. Saeturn Family Farm, located near Sonoma State University, sells its delicious strawberries and blackberries here and only here. A diverse selection of fresh produce is offered by two familiar farms, French Garden Farm of Sebastopol and Ortiz Farm of Santa. French Garden Farm has carrots, fennel, beets, kale, chard, salad mix, herbs, a big selection of lettuces, flowers… Read More »

The Petaluma Farmers Market, located in Walnut Park a few blocks south of downtown, opens for its 26th season this Saturday, May 19. There will be about 50 vendors, most of them returning, a few new. The Patch starts its 2012 season here; you can expect early zucchini, onions, potatoes and such from this Sonoma farm,… Read More »

The Wednesday market opens, as it always has, at 8:30 a.m. Participating vendors include DeSantis Farms, with an array of familiar and rare citrus and other fruits; Schetelwitz Family Farm, which has the season’s first apricots, nectarines and plums;… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Oakmont

Saturday’s Oakmont Certified Farmers Market was smaller than usual, with about half the number of vendors that participate at the peak of harvest; some were on vacation and others engaged elsewhere on the holiday weekend. It makes sense to take time off now. We’re in a shoulder season, as late winter crops wind down and spring crops struggle to hit their stride. “If the sun ever shines for more than a hour,” a vendor at another market commented, “we might… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Santa Rosa Wednesday Market

On Wednesday mornings, the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market is small and intimate, about a quarter the size of its Saturday sibling. Customers meander through a single aisle, greeting friends and chatting with favorite vendors. It’s an easy market, with plenty of parking, no lines and little competition for, say, spring’s first green garlic. On Wednesdays you needn’t worry about timing; if you sleep late, it’s no big deal. The market awaits, including Triple T Farm’s fresh spinach, which… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Sonoma Valley

On Friday morning, the Sonoma Valley farmers market is filled with customers–shopping, chatting and lingering over nibbles such as hummingbird-shaped cookies and lumpia–as a stream of moms, grandparents and nannies usher babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and pups into the adjacent park. Two vendors, Paul’s Produce and Oak Hill Farm, are located nearly across with each other, with their similar harvests an evocative expression of this valley’s <<ital>> terroir<<ital>>. Both have extraordinary carrots, with the thinnest of skins, an appealing snap and… Read More »
