Fresh From Our Farmers: Bodega Bay Farmers Market Opens

On Sunday, the Bodega Bay Community Farmers Market opens for its 2014 season, which continues through the end of October. This is the market’s third season. It’s a lovely market, primarily a community affair but a wonderful stop if you’ve heading to the coast and worthy, as well, of a special trip. Opening day features nearly twenty vendors, some that attend other markets, a few you find only here. Raymond’s Bakery of Cazadero , with its extraordinary breads and both… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Salmon Creek Ranch

On Saturday, Salmon Creek Ranch of Bodega had nearly its full array of products at the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market. Duck eggs are plentiful again and should remain so for the next several months. “Ducks are seasonal layers, much more dramatically so than chickens,” Jocelyn Brabyn, who oversees the market stall, explains, adding that ducks respond to longer daylight hours and that production went up exponentially on March 20, the first day of spring. The Brabyns do not… Read More »

Feeding My Dogs Joey & Lark: March 2013 Update

If I can cook for humans, I asked myself, I should be able to cook for canines, right? Right! Only there’s not a lot of cooking involved.… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Santa Rosa Original Market This SUNDAY

The Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market will take place this Sunday, not Saturday. The change is for this week only. This shift is necessary because of a previously scheduled event at the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. Events at the Center are scheduled many months in advance and all those in place before the market moved to its current location last May must be honored. The market’s board of directors are working with the Center and the county to… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Schedule Change This Week for Santa Rosa Original Farmers Market

When the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market moved to the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts (50 Mark West Springs Rd.), it was with the understanding that the space, including the area where the market takes place, had been reserved for special events that would require, in some instances, a shortened market and, in others, a cancellation of a market day. That’s the case this Saturday, November 3. A previously scheduled event will be taking place, leaving no room… Read More »

Drinking Beauty: Dehlinger ’94

Last night, I cooked dinner for a friend, a long-promised birthday present. I planned the meal around bone-in ribeye steaks from Salmon Creek Ranch, as I’d been telling my friend how good they are for quite some time. He was eager to see for himself. Dinner began with chilled tomato-cilantro soup topped with Strauss whole milk yogurt, jalapeno hot sauce and a splash of Hawaiian chile water, with fried Padrons alongside. The tomatoes were from The Patch, the Padrons from… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Bodega Bay Market Opens

One of our tiniest seasonal farmers markets, the one in Bodega Bay, opened for its second season on May 27. The market is a delightful community affair, with a leisurely pace in a beautiful setting. When I arrived last Sunday at 10 a.m., the field where the market takes place was cloaked in fog and bathed by a brisk wind, one that chilled shoppers and vendors but did not threaten stall tents. By the time I left an hour later,… Read More »

Fresh From Our Farmers: Launch of the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market’s New Location

The Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers Market greeted Saturday morning from its new home in the southeast parking lot of the Wells Fargo Center for the Arts. By 8:30 a.m., the market’s official opening time, it was full of shoppers. You could almost hear a collective sigh of relief, as two years of tension, anxiety, unhappiness and hard work receded and a new era was born. Although the space is about 25 percent smaller than its former location at the Veterans… Read More »
